Castle Rock Radials

Castle Rock Tread Close-Up

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Castle Rock radials has ribs with breaks. These breaks allow water to run off to the sides. The Castle Rock tread also has sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. Both of these features greatly improve traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Castle Rock radials are constructed with double steel belts and double nylon cords. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Castle Rock Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - LH64VR

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Castle Rock ST205/75R14 radial trailer tire in a Load Range C, mounted on this 14 inch black Margay aluminum wheel with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is ideal for RVs, campers, and trailers. We'll start by going over the wheel first. It's an aluminum wheel, it's very durable, lightweight, and rust proof. And we mentioned the design, it's a Margay Series five-spoke design, has the black color.

And then if you noticed, the edge of the spokes has a machine edge to it, and the outer spoke is machine finished also. They do use an automotive-grade clear coat finish on the front, protects the wheel from any scuffs and scratches. Now, the diameter on this wheel, which is always measured inside to inside, on this wheel is 14 inches diameter. The width on just the wheel is five inches wide. Now, this wheel does have a bolt pattern of 5 on 4 1/2 inches.

And if you wanna measure that on a wheel that's an odd number of lugs, in this case, five, what you do is pick any hole, let's say this one, and then you're gonna measure across to either one of these holes right across from it. But when you measure, it's from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge to whichever hole you measure to. On this one, it'll measure 4 1/2 inches, so it's a 5 lug, 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. It does use a wheel lug size of 1/2 inch by 20. The weight capacity on just the wheel by itself is 2,200 pounds.

If you noticed, this wheel does not have a center cap in it. It is not included, we do sell those separately if you prefer to have one. You just wanna make sure to get a center cap that has the same diameter of this pilot hole right here, which is 3.19 inches, 'cause when you insert your cap, it'll go through that hole and hold it into place. The tire on here is a Castle Rock radial tire. It is constructed with double steel belts, double nylon ply, and then they use a nice nylon tread firming belt overlay around the tire to help prevent tread separation.

It is a radial ply tire, which is great for highway use. And this tire is an ST tire, which stands for special trailer tire, 'cause it has the sturdy sidewalls, so they can handle heavy loads. It is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on other vehicles. Tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall here. If you look right up here, it'll say ST for special trailer, 205/75R14, the R means that it is a radial tire. Section width is gonna be right at eight inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 26.1. This tire is a Load Range C, which means it's a six-ply rated tire, has a maximum load of 1,760 pounds at 50 psi. And the trailer tires now come through with a speed rating stamped on them, and they usually use a letter designation for a speed rating. And where that would be is right after the tire size we just went over. If you go a little bit further, it'll say speed rating and then the letter L. And then in parentheses, it'll say 75 miles per hour, so this tire has a speed rating of 75 miles per hour. This assembly does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation specifications, and this does come with a complimentary roadside assistance for two years. Flat tire service is available 24/7 anywhere in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico. But that's gonna do it for the review on this Castle Rock ST205/75R14 radial trailer tire in a Load Range C, mounted on this 14 inch black Margay aluminum wheel with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern.
